Personal & Physical

At Beatrice Tate School we believe that physical, mental and emotional health are fundamental to all learning.

Our Personal and Physical Curriculum ensures all learners are given opportunities to achieve their maximum physical, social and personal potential. Preparing learners to be confident, independent, safe adults will equip them with the skills they need for the next phase of their lives.

We recognise that personal and physical development includes much more than physical education. It encompasses self-awareness, communication, emotional regulation and the ability to make choices, participate and advocate for oneself as part of a family, community and wider society.

Key Curriculum Aims:

Increase physical independence, self-advocacy and autonomy
Help learners understand their bodies, develop movement control and make independent choices about health and participation. Activities encourage discovery of interests and promote enjoyment, ownership and lifelong wellbeing.

Improve fitness and promote physical health
Offer varied programmes that build fitness, coordination and body awareness through hydrotherapy, rebound therapy, yoga, sensory circuits and the Motor Activity Training Programme (MATP). Activities are carefully adapted to individual physical and therapeutic needs, ensuring participation and success for all.

Decrease vulnerability and increase social safety
Support learners to make informed, safe life choices and understand personal boundaries. Through PSHE and RSHE, they explore personal, social and online safety, recognise risks and develop protective behaviours that build confidence and security.

Foster personal, social and emotional wellbeing
Provide structured opportunities for reflection, communication and emotional regulation. Learners develop resilience, self-esteem and a balanced sense of wellbeing through teamwork, creative movement and community activities.

Build and sustain healthy relationships
Encourage positive relationships with peers, staff, family and the wider community. Shared activities and inclusive sport promote empathy, cooperation and celebration of collective success.

Values and principles

Our Personal and Physical Curriculum is built on the principles of self-determination, inclusivity, accessibility and respect.

We believe that every young person has the right to be seen, heard and valued.

By meeting learners where they are, we ensure that all experiences are relevant, engaging and purposeful. Diversity is celebrated and individuality is respected.

The curriculum focuses on empowerment—helping learners to make choices, express themselves confidently and take increasing responsibility for their own wellbeing. It is not a single subject, but a thread that runs through every aspect of school life, connecting health, movement, relationships and independence.

School context

As a secondary special school for learners with severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties, we use dynamic, multi-sensory and therapeutic approaches to ensure every learner can participate meaningfully.

Teaching combines structured learning with specialist sessions such as hydrotherapy, MATP, rebound therapy, yoga, PSHE/RSHE and sensory integration.

Assessment of progress is coordinated through the school’s STARRS system, drawing on MAPP dimensions—independence, fluency, maintenance and generalisation—to provide a holistic picture of development.

Personal learning objectives are derived from each learner’s EHCP and reviewed with families and multidisciplinary partners.

Through this carefully designed curriculum, learners at Beatrice Tate School develop the confidence, understanding and independence needed to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.
