Assessment and Progress

Assessment at Beatrice Tate School

Beatrice Tate School uses a bespoke assessment system that combines evidence-based frameworks to capture the small, non-linear steps of progress made by learners with severe and profound learning difficulties.

For learners at early developmental stages, assessment is based on Welsh Routes for Learning (WRfL), which offers a detailed and holistic framework for observing cognition, communication and sensory engagement. For semi-formal and formal learners, progress is assessed through PIVATS, EQUALS and other subject-specific frameworks.

Across all pathways, our in-house STARRS platform (Student Tracking, Assessment, Recording and Reporting System) integrates these frameworks within a Mapping and Assessing Personal Progress (MAPP) approach, enabling teachers to evaluate progress across four key dimensions: independence, fluency, maintenance and generalisation.

The statutory Engagement Model informs our understanding of learner engagement but is not used as the sole assessment tool. By combining WRfL, MAPP, MATP and STARRS, Beatrice Tate provides a comprehensive, research-based system for measuring and celebrating meaningful progress.
