What makes Beatrice Tate School unique

What makes Beatrice Tate School unique

At Beatrice Tate School we place each learner at the centre of everything we do.

Our learners achieve best when they are valued as individuals and supported by an expert team working in partnership with families and professionals. We set high expectations and share a strong commitment to helping every learner make meaningful progress in communication, independence, physical development and personal wellbeing.

A curriculum tailored to every learner

Our curriculum meets the wide range of abilities and needs within our school community.
It offers clear learning pathways that reflect each learner’s starting point, interests and aspirations.

We focus on meaningful and functional learning that enables every learner to engage, communicate and make progress in ways that are relevant to their lives.

The curriculum promotes curiosity, independence and creativity through an integrated approach combining academic, therapeutic and social learning experiences.

Learning is enriched through sensory exploration, the arts, movement, community participation and opportunities to apply knowledge and skills in real-life contexts.

Assessment that celebrates progress

Our assessment, recording and reporting system (STARRS) recognises the achievements of every learner, however small or complex.

Progress is measured across key developmental areas including communication, cognition, physical skills, independence and social interaction.

Assessment informs teaching, celebrates success and ensures learning remains purposeful and engaging.

Regular reviews with families and professionals ensure that each learner’s programme continues to reflect their evolving needs and priorities.

High expectations in a supportive environment

Our school culture is warm, respectful and aspirational.

We maintain high expectations for every learner, recognising that achievement looks different for each individual.

Staff work collaboratively so that learners experience success, feel valued and develop confidence and resilience.

All staff receive ongoing training in supporting complex learning and health needs. We also work closely with therapists, health professionals and partner agencies to provide integrated support that enables every learner to thrive.

Partnership with families and community

Education is most effective when it is a partnership.

Families are central to each learner’s success and are actively involved in reviews, learning objective setting and celebrations of success and progress.

We also work closely with local schools, colleges, health and social care services and community organisations to ensure continuity and support beyond the school day.

Preparation for adult life

As learners move through the school, increasing emphasis is placed on preparing for life beyond Beatrice Tate.

This includes personal and social development, independence skills, work-related learning and community experiences that build confidence and readiness for adulthood.

Our goal is that every learner leaves Beatrice Tate equipped for the next stage of their journey – confident, supported, and ready to take their place in the wider community.

At Beatrice Tate School, what makes us unique is not only what we teach, but how we teach – with care, creativity and a deep belief in the potential of every learner.
