Mathematics at Beatrice Tate School is taught as a specific lesson and across the curriculum in all Key Stages. Our curriculum is designed to meet the individual needs of all students and covers attainment through the P Scales into National Curriculum levels.

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and their ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisation and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.’

Within the Mathematics curriculum, pupils develop their skills within the areas of number, estimation, calculation, shape, space and measurement. However we ensure that pupils also have the opportunity to transfer, practice and develop their skills in practical, real life situations, for example shopping trips. Mathematical understanding is a fundamental life skill.

As part of the Mathematics curriculum, we use a wide range of approaches to enhance their teaching and individual learning: from a range of multi-sensory approaches and techniques, interactive ICT and apps, to the use of ‘Numicon’ and the ‘Pound Plus Money Program’.

  • We use a wide range of ICT equipment (for example projectors, iPads, touch screen computers, Promethean boards and MP3 players) in maths lessons across P Scales into National Curriculum levels to create lessons that are highly motivating and accessible to all students.
  • We also use designated iPads as a mathematical teaching tool to allow individuals to maximise learning and practice skills on subject specific apps
  • Numicon resources are available throughout all key stages
  • All key stages have weekly sessions where the focus is on practical use of mathematics for example, shopping and daily living skills in school and out in the local community.

At Beatrice Tate School, mathematics will be taught through our current mathematical themes at a level appropriate to our pupils needs.
